Imagine living in an area where within an hour drive there is a castle. Wouldn’t that be amazing? During my one month stay in germany last year I had the opportunity to visit two of the most magnificent places I have ever visited in my life. One of them was the Schweriner Schloss. It was truly a moment out of a fairytale story. The little girl inside of me was shrieking and giggling as I pranced around the halls of the castle. Obviously you cant actually prance around the halls of the castle but you get the image. Everything I saw during my day trip to Schwerin was a dream.
From where my partner‘s family lives it was about an hour and 30 or 45 minutes drive to get to the Schweiner Schloss. We left the house around 1 o‘clock in the afternoon and arrived around 3:30 to 4:00. The first thing we did as soon as we started to see the castle was look for a parking spot. One of the things I have learned from my first and second time in Germany is that finding a parking spot is brutal especially a cheap one. I was lucky to have a German boyfriend to drive me around so I did not have to worry about it. We could‘ve parked further away from the castle and just walked to it but instead we kept driving until we found a parking space closest to the castle. I think that if you just search up parking on apple maps then it should provide several options. There were several parking lots that were right next to the lake and castle but if it is a busy day just know that some of these lots will be closed once it is full.
After we parked we grabbed our parking ticket and started to walk towards the castle. It is important to keep the ticket safe so that you are able to leave the parking lot when you are done. The weather was chilly but the closer to the castle we got the more excited and astounded I became. Disney world‘s castle was nothing compared to it. It is the real deal. Even though there was construction on the side of the castle it was still such a beautiful sight to see. The first thing we did as we got around the side of the castle was look for a bathroom. We entered the castle and followed the signs directing to the restrooms. You would think that the bathroom for both the ladies and the gentleman’s were in the same area but instead the restroom on the first floor is for gentleman’s and on the next floor is for ladies.
If i can recall I believe that the third floor is how you enter and view some of the rooms of the castle. Obviously you will need tickets in order to enter and view these rooms. Our ticket costed 17 euros for the both of us, meaning that each ticket is 8,50 euros. The ticket included entrance to a few of the rooms available to the public to view, in which one of the best part was the throne room. Along with the different rooms for the public eye to view there is another section of the castle that showcases a collection of art, artifacts, and porcelains. This part of the castle was also available for us to view as it was included in our purchased tickets. For more questions on the prices of the admission tickets you can visit their website and there will be information on there that might be able to help and answer your questions better. My suggestion is to just go for it and make sure you start your day early because then you will have more time to wander around the castle and garden.

After getting our tickets we rushed up the stairs because by the time we were ready to start our tour of the castle it was 1 hour till they closed. Obviously we couldn’t do a guided tour because it was close to closing time but we still enjoyed it. We walked through the rooms at our own pace and enjoyed the artwork and interior design that surrounded us. Every single detail put into the wall designs were absolutely gorgeous, especially the throne room. The throne room was heavenly. From the gold trims to the beautiful painting on the ceiling it was royally magnificent. When you look up at the ceiling you will also notice the different crest of each city of Mecklenburg surrounding the room. We looked all the way around until we found Rostock‘s crest, which is a griffin. All in all the throne room was definitely my favorite room.

One of the things I was interested in doing was to walk around the court yard but unfortunately it was closed. After walking around all the different rooms we went back to the first floor where the gift shop resided. I decided to get a cute crown pen that says Schwerin schloss as well as a cute gold photo frame. As we were walking out to the ticket lobby I noticed that we had a few more minutes until the castle closed to the public so we decided to follow a couple in front of us that led us to another museum entrance. We let the ticket lady punch our tickets and we quickly walked through the collection of paintings, sculptures, crafts, and porcelain. The porcelain collection was definitely my favorite. The colors, designs, and artwork on them were gorgeous. I highly recommend seeing the collection before leaving the castle.

Once we finished viewing the collections or they started to rush us out since it was closing time, we exited the building and walked around to the back of the castle. By this time it was starting to get dark. While it was still gorgeous to look at it was too dark for us to take pictures or see anything. As we were about to get around the castle and to the bridge, where we crossed to get to the castle, some Polizisten showed up and escorted us out back to the other exit where we entered the backside from. So Tip: Come earlier in the day so that once you were done with the inside of the castle you could walk the grounds of the castle and enjoy it in the daylight. I am assuming that part of the castle grounds is closed when the museum is closed.

After being escorted out we walked across the other bridge to what seems like a park in the dark but is actually the castles garden. Unfortunately we did not stay there for long as it was getting too cold for me and it was too dark for us to even enjoy it. So we started heading off the grounds of the garden and castle and headed towards the Döner shop that we google searched on our phones. It was delicious but there was definitely too much cheese for a person that is lactose intolerant. After eating we decided to walk around one of the malls and do some shopping. I ended up buying a cleanser and moisturizer from Douglas, which is a beauty store similar to a Sephora in the states. 30 to 40 minutes went by and we grew tired so we headed back to the car and after 10 euros we were on our way home. The 10 euros was for the parking by the way.

Overall, if you plan to travel to Schwerin to see the castle make sure to go earlier in the day so that you have time to explore the grounds since it is pretty big. Unless you are staying in the area for more than a day then you would be fine with visiting the area at the time you choose. If you are staying more than one day I would suggest spending one day just exploring the inside of the castle and then use the next day to explore the grounds of the castle as well as the garden. Along with the castle and garden there are many other things to do in the city as well. Other things you could do include an art museum, cathedral, theater, zoo, and more.

That concludes my trip to the Schweriner schloss. I hope you enjoyed reading about my trip to the castle as well as the pictures that showcase my excitement and joy to be at the castle. It was a magical trip and a dream come true.
